The right gear

Colourful snow gear at Mt Buller

A trip to the snow is always more enjoyable if you're dressed correctly. Dress in layers so that you can peel off if you get too hot. The outer layer should be waterproof and protecting warm underclothing, a T-shirt, skivvy and a fleece. Ski hire places can assist with clothing. Remember, take a change of clothes in case you get wet from playing in the snow.

How do I get the right gear?
All resorts offer you the convenience of ski and snowboard rental outlets 'on mountain', saving you the trouble of transporting the equipment from home, and the expense of buying gear that may not suit you as you become a more experienced skier or snowboarder. You can also hire waterproof outer clothing, but cannot hire gloves, goggles and beanies, so it's a good idea to buy these from an outdoor or ski shop before you leave, or from an 'on mountain' outlet.

What other gear do I need?
Being at a high altitude means the risk of sunburn, even on cloudy days. Make sure you wear sunscreen and a hat, and goggles or sunglasses to block ultra-violet light and the reflection of the sun off the snow.
