Make the most of the serene drive in the Dandenong Ranges and enjoy a meal at Ripe. Ex-visual arts lecturer and photographer Carolyn Deutsher, who doesn't shy away from visual theatrics such as cake making at the big table, runs this cosy restaurant/cafe. The meals are as hearty and filling as you'd expect from the country location, such as lentil and bacon soup or semolina gnocchi doused in a sweet tomato sauce. Breakfast is also served with homemade muesli and French toast with local berries; but if you want to try lunch, be patient - Ripe is a very popular lunch haven for locals.
