Located in temperate rainforest country in Victoria's Far East Gippsland. The small town of Orbost is the gateway to our wonderful Wilderness Coast. Orbost is about a 45 minute drive from Lakes Entrance. The Orbost Woodworkers and artisans have built a $2 million Exhibition Centre, which is a work of art in itself. Designed to showcase local timbers, the OEC is the permanent home of the National Collection of Wood Design which features wood art. 1-3 pieces are added to the collection every year though an Acquisition Prize. As of 2008 the collection has 35 outstanding wood pieces - mainly from Australian Timbers and recycled timbers. The OEC has a large retail area full of wooden and other artworks - sculptures, bowls, boxes, furniture, jewellery and other unique craftwork all made by local artists. The OEC has a gallery featuring different monthly art exhibitions and will, in November 2008 see the exceptional Talking Wall Project open - a visual story of the Snowy River from its beginnings - thousands of years ago - to modern time, painted by local artists of Orbost and surrounds. A free tea/coffee/biscuit is included in the entry fee of $4. The Orbost Exhibition Centre houses great wood and art and is a must for inclusion on anyone's itinerary for the region.
