Where to go the morning after the night before...
In a city renowned for its café culture, a good breakfast is not hard to come by. But a morning-after breakfast is a different beast entirely. The hangover is unforgiving. The Challenge: The Best Place To Go The Morning After The Night Before.
A difficult category. The coffee needs to be good, the seats plentiful and the water promt. There can be no cold toast, waiting lists, rubbery eggs.
But find somewhere that excels at breakfast and chances are you have yourself a café that can handle everything else blindfolded. The simplest things are often the hardest to get right.
After extensive research throughout this fair city, and much gruelling drinking and carousing to provide the necessary foundation for a good hangover, it was decided. We have a very strong contender.
Café Orange, found on a corner at 126 Chapel Street, Windsor.
A little tram ride out of the city, or maybe a few stops on the train, and youıre there. It may not be your local but it certainly is not hard to get there.
Itıs also not hard to spot. Not just for its orange awning and tables outside but for the crowds. Upon approach you are greeted by friendly, efficient staff who control the seating and wait tables with military precision and eyes in the back of their heads..
A couple attempt to claim a newly vacated table and are quickly ushered to some bar seating, the waitress having intented the table for another couple.
They are all well aware their street side tables are possibly the most sought after real estate in Windsor.
If you wait, it's never for long. The café has two shop fronts and the tables extend back into the back rooms to a garden outside.
Wood panelled walls, vintage champagne bottles and retro orange accessories set the mood inside, but its outside where all the action is. Grab a table against the bench and watch the parade of the bleary eyed, the early birds, the fitness freaks and the just plain hungry. Orange has a reputation as a place to be seen in itself, so if you're not up for dressing up bring your biggest sunglasses.
Our waitress Kate is looking after us as if we were her own friends.
Coffees
are ordered, menus and water before even having to ask.
And when the coffee comes, it is possibly The Best Coffee in The World.
Right then and there. Could this photo ever do justice?
Just the right mix of espresso through the thick foam to make every mouthful a creamy caffeine fix. You know immediatly even if you don't need the caffeine, you'll want a second.
The menu tempts and inspires even the most jaded breakfast enthusiast, or indecisive person getting by on two hours sleep. Little wonder their signature breakfast involves a Bloody Mary.
The eggs arrive quickly. One, the tried and tested standard poached egg with bacon and tomato , the other served scrambled to accompany the Italian bread, charred and served with sundried tomatoes, acocado and mushrooms, and chilli jam. The avocado is generous, almost half a whole. The bread is drizzled with oil and tastes deliciously char grilled. The eggs are scrambled to perfection. The poached eggs were apparently brilliant. You can take my word for it, but photographs donıt lie.
Feeling like breakfast? Never mind. You now have an excuse to go out, enjoy yourself, paint the town red, get a little bleary eyed, safe in the knowledge its all for a good cause. A great excuse to head down the bottom end of Chapel Street and check out Café Orange.
