Wentworth NSW, is situated 34 kilometres north-west of Mildura, at the confluence of Australia's greatest rivers, the Darling (2740km) and the Murray (2530km), a popular destination for domestic and international visitors - a 'great place to meet'. The area is unique because the Murray Darling river system is the fourth largest in the world after the Amazon, Nile and Mississippi. Darling tributaries flow from northern NSW and Queensland, sourced by summer rains, and the Murray from south-eastern rivers receives winter rain and spring snow thaw - twelve months supply of water for this desert region.

AVIC staff supply maps, drive and walk trails for an area abounding in natural features, enjoying superb weather for sightseeing, house-boating, fishing, bird-watching, camping, plus top class sporting facilities. Discover vivid contrasts, an oasis surrounded by vast tracts of red sandy desert, exciting landscapes, river environs, and lush farmlands. Cultural heritage is covered by local Aboriginal guides conducting expert tours to Mungo National Park World Heritage area.

Wentworth thrived during the paddlesteamer era, recognised as the busiest inland port in NSW, when boats large & small became a 'way of life' on our rivers. European settlers used waterways to transport precious wool cargo and everyday supplies from/to grazing properties via South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

Today, river-trade is almost non-existent, yet the historic port town retains a village atmosphere with an 'old worlde' charm created by many classical heritage buildings (including National Trust classification) and a town wharf.

An exciting project is nearing completion- restoration of a 1907 paddlesteamer, P.S.Ruby.  When steaming again she will be the Port of Wentworth 'flagship', another example of 'gems' we have that reflect those grand old days.
