Play golf in Victoria
Victoria is blessed with a variety of high quality golf courses in both metropolitan and regional areas.
Quality and variety
Victoria is best known as a golfing destination primarily because it contains 20 of the nation's Top 50 courses.
Melbourne is home to Royal Melbourne located in the famed sandbelt region in the southeast suburbs.
The sandbelt group of golf courses evolved during the golden age of golf architecture and are built on land perfectly suited to golf. They are private members' clubs but interstate and international visitors are encouraged to apply for tee times.
Go to www.sandbelt.com.au for course access and booking details. Selected golf tour operators can also access some of the private sandbelt courses, providing players meet set guidelines.
Many other terrific layouts have emerged over the past two decades to add to the richness of golf in Victoria.
The Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas on either side of the bay boast a host of quality links and dunes courses. Both destinations are easily reached by road from Melbourne in a little over an hour. While a car and passenger ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff taking 40 minutes for the crossing provides a reliable sea link.
And there are also several fine 18s overlooking the coastline of Bass Strait, along with some emerging resort and residential courses in other parts of Melbourne.
Most offer public access and cater for a variety of handicap and experience levels.
Servicing the inner city are a few well-patronised municipal courses and golf practice ranges.
Also enticing for the travelling golfer are several other hotspots. Many towns along the Murray River offer terrific play and stay packages. As does the Yarra Valley east of Melbourne.
Affordability
Across the board golf in Victoria is great value for money.
Green fee rates do fluctuate quite a lot for a multitude of reasons, especially course quality and reputation. Do your homework – most venues offer discount deals at selected times of the day and week.
But the best tip when leaving home to visit Victoria is to always pack the clubs.
